Yellowstone's Geyser Basins...amazing!

We spent all day today in Yellowstone exploring just a handful of the geothermal features that make this land unique. We started the day with a drive down to Old Faithful and enjoyed being there to see the eruption. As always, the boys wanted to explore the souvenir shops…and there were several to choose from. Some of the boys spent time exploring the exhibits at the visitor center.

We then made the most of the drive back with several stops to see other geysers and other features on the way back to the hotel. We stopped at the Grand Prismatic Spring which is a bubbling feature measuring over 100 yards wide. The water is 160 degrees or hotter. We all walked the boardwalk around the entire spring.

From there it was just another couple of minutes drive to the Fire Hole Lake Drive. This loop road had several smaller geysers and we actually witnessed a couple of them erupt. After dealing with the crowds of people at Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring areas, it was nice to have this area “almost” to ourselves.

We had about an hour’s drive back to the hotel and were thrilled to come upon twenty elk grazing in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone. We were able to get some really close-up photos. We also saw pronghorn antelope today, a couple of bison, and some boys say they spotted a moose.

We ended the day by driving directly to the restaurant for a late-night dinner. It was a long day. All’s well.

I never imagined that when I started taking kids on travel trips in 1978 that I would still be taking trips today! It has been a great ride and I'm looking forward to more.

Over the years I've had the fortune to travel across the US several times, visit Canada several times, experienced Alaska, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Europe several times.
