Memorable Moment in MTA History

Every so often I'll write up one of our memorable moments from current or past trips. And since we're not on a trip right now, this is one of those moments from a past experience.

Flash back about five or six weeks ago and we were enjoying our 12--day adventure in the Colorado Rockies. The boys know that if we ever get a sincere compliment from a stranger on our behavior, they'll get a special "treat." It's usually ice cream or a milkshake or something like that. In any given summer we usually get several compliments at the beginning of a trip and fewer and fewer as the trip moves forward. I'm not sure why that is because truthfully...these kids are really well behaved.

But this past summer in Colorado they could never quite get anyone to notice just how good they were. Perhaps it was just the sure size of the group....17 boys and 4 adults. So finally, one day at a Subway for lunch in Divide, Colorado after the boys headed back to the van and elderly couple said, "You know, for a big group they weren't that bad." And that was as close as they got.

But I'm here to tell you, this was a fantastic group of boys and I'm excited that so many of them are going with me next summer to Wyoming & Montana.

And that's a memorable moment in MTA history!

Photo Note: The photo is from our last night's dinner at "The Loop" in Manitou Springs, a really nice Mexican restaurant. Our seventeen boys were a lot quieter than the ten adults sitting right across from us.

The oldest teenagers on our Colorado trip were amazing...and in a good way!

I'm starting this blog with a comment I posted on the MindStretch Travel Adventures facebook page. I figured I would re-state this here.

Our trip to the Colorado Rockies has been back exactly one month and I didn’t want to miss another day before reporting on something I learned by spending 12 days with 17 boys. Kids can amaze you. I’ll have to say I was a little worried about having so many older boys (ages 14-15) along as helpers. I figured that they would be the ones I had to keep “under control” during our adventure. Well I’m here to tell you that my faith in teenagers – or at least these teenagers – was 100% restored. Those boys were fantastic. My thanks to Mark Gilbert (4 trips), Stephen Baker (3 trips), Tom McNichols (3 trips), Jack Lozyniak (2 trips) and Lucas May (2 trips). You guys were great. And guess what…just about all of them are coming back next summer. I’m pumped!

I never imagined that when I started taking kids on travel trips in 1978 that I would still be taking trips today! It has been a great ride and I'm looking forward to more.

Over the years I've had the fortune to travel across the US several times, visit Canada several times, experienced Alaska, the Bahamas, Mexico, and Europe several times.
