Today was truly a non-stop day. Started with our bike ride in Acadia National Park. We met the outfitter at the park visitor center and got sized up for bikes. They had plenty of bikes in all sizes all lined up and the outfitter helped the boys get the right one. Then came helmets, and then came some instruction on proper gear changing, safety rules, and some rides around the parking area to make sure everything was working. Within 30 minutes we were off for what amounted to a 2 1/2 hour ride into the Park on the carriage roads. These roads, similar to "rails-to-trails" paths...are wide, packed surfaces with no automobile traffic. There is hiking, equestrian, and biking traffic and we had to be aware of all of that. We chose a wonderful ride that went around Eagle Lake and another smaller lake. Beautiful views, cool temperatures. The hills seemed steeper from when I was here last time, but I'm thinking that was due to the fact I'm now nine years older.
After our ride we went to the motel for 30 minutes just to regroup and headed to lunch at a barbecue place called Mainely Meat. That was some good eating. We followed this with a fun game of miniature golf across from the restaurant with prizes for low scores. To top off our golf, we had an ice cream treat to reward boys for some of their compliments they've received on this trip. I'm happy to report they have indeed picked up several compliments from complete strangers and that's how they earn these desserts.
Next up was a drive back into the park to go up to Cadillac Mountain, a 1,500 foot mountain overlooking the bays and the Atlantic Ocean. 1,500 feet might not sound impressive but these are the highest mountains on the East coast and the views are incredible. Boys enjoyed playing "safely" around the rock outcroppings.
Returned to the motel for a quick 30-minute swim session before heading into town for dinner via the town shuttle. We ended our evening listening to a few songs by the town's community band.
