West Virginia Mountains / 7 Days
June 23-29, 2013
It’s been many years since we’ve last taken a group to the mountains of West Virginia. It’s going to be great to get back.
While this trip is especially geared toward younger adventurers, all ages will enjoy this easy-going and fun-filled week-long trip. If you've finished with third grade by the time of the trip, you're eligible. Older boys often return on these adventures as "trip assistants" and "junior counselors" depending on age and past MindStretch Travel Adventures experience. Each trip is led by Mark Levin and at least two other adults.
We will base out of the Greenbrier River Valley region which is a fantastic staging area for seven days of kid-sized adventures.

What will we do?Our activities vary each day, and each day is different than the day before. That's just one thing that sets a program like this apart from all others. And even though we're busy...we still save time to relax and just take in the scenery and the friendships. Each evening we'll return to our comfortable motels, all with swimming pools.
Some of our planned activities include: Bicycling along the Greenbrier River Trail, a Rails-to-Trails conversion. This 78-mile trail is operated by the West Virginia state park system. It follows the river for most of the way and crosses old railroad trestles, goes through tunnels, and offers great views throughout. We’ll bike approximately a 20-mile section. Exploring underground on a tour at the Lost World Cavern. One of the caves we’ll visit is 1000 feet by 300 feet in size with a ceiling height of 120 feet. Gemstone Mining where we get to keep our treasures. Tubing on the Greenbrier River. Enjoying a train ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad which will transport us back in time to relive an era when steam-driven locomotives were an essential part of everyday life. Trips to Cass are filled with rich histories of the past, unparalleled views of a vast wilderness area, and close-up encounters with the sights and sounds of original steam-driven locomotives. Experiencing the greatest government secret ever kept. We’re going to get to see an underground bunker built in the late 1950s by the U.S. Government, which was to be an emergency relocation center for the U.S. Congress in the event of a national crisis. The facility even had complete House and Senate chambers, offices, meeting centers, and sleeping quarters for the entire Congress. The bunker was maintained at a constant state of readiness until its discovery in 1992. Hiking some historic Civil War trails in the Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park, site of West Virginia’s last significant Civil War battle. Going flat-water canoeing on Lake Sherwood in Monongahela National Forest. Visiting the Green Bank Science Center and seeing the world’s largest moving telescope. We’ll have a guided tour. We’ll also spend time exploring some of the small towns in the region including Lewisburg, named a Top Mountain Town in America. We’ll also go geocaching, visit a general store, travel through a covered bridge, and even spend an evening having our own bowling, tournament. More You Should Know... This isn't a camping trip though we'll enjoy all kinds of camp-type activities during the days. But it's wonderful knowing that in the evening we'll return to our motels for a relaxing swim and downtime before heading out to dinner in a sit-down restaurant. Boys even get to order what they want from the menu. We'll often prepare our own trail lunches depending on the planned activities and breakfasts are usually continental style.
